Brown & Brown Flagship ~ Our History
Brown & Brown Flagship began as an insurance agency specializing in marine operations and has since developed diverse expertise in the insurance needs of government contractors, large habitational risks, international manufacturing companies, and technology firms. In November 2000, the Flagship Group became a part of Brown & Brown, Inc., the nation's eighth largest independent insurance broker.
1977 ~
Brown & Brown Flagship began operating in September 1977 as the Desert American Insurance Agency under the ownership of a corporation headquartered in El Paso, Texas. In response to industry demand, the focus for the ensuing seven years and nucleus of all future expansion of the agency became large marine operations such as shipyards and shipping terminals.
1984 ~
Local ownership purchased the El Paso interest, the agency's name was changed to Flagship Group, Ltd., and, in response to industry demand, the focus of work expanded to include property & casualty coverages, employee benefit solutions, and a specialized division servicing the needs of commercial fishing vessel owners along the Atlantic seacoast.
1988 ~
Flagship Benefit Consultants was established in order to expand services to include health insurance, executive compensation programs, and life insurance. Today that same entity is an integral part of the core organization and offers employee benefit programs for corporate clients and for Flagship Group, as well.
1990 ~
Flagship Maritime Adjusters, Inc. was formed to provide claims management services to clients and other third party accounts.
1993 ~
Buroughs & Watson Insurance Agency was acquired. B & W was a large, well-established agency (est. 1933) and included the addition of both staff and existing insurance accounts.
1998 ~
The Habitational Division of Flagship Group was established to assist in the placement and risk management functions of brokering large habitational property schedules along the east coast.
1999 ~
The Government Contractors Division of Flagship Group was established to expand and define our existing government services clientele. Our partnership with the premier broker for insuring government contractors, along with our history and expertise in managing risk for this specialized group, make this division both unique and popular for the government services industry.
2000 ~
Brown & Brown, Inc., the nation's eighth largest independent insurance broker, acquired Flagship Group in an effort to establish a significant presence in Virginia while continuing the strong client relationships that formed the foundation of success for Flagship Group policyholders.
