Stephen A. Johnsen
Stephen A. Johnsen is the Executive Vice President of the Brown & Brown Flagship, a commercial insurance agency specializing in design, placement and service of insurance for large marine operations, a variety of corporate enterprises, and commercial fishing vessels along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Steve started the company in 1978 and has guided it to its current status as a full service insurance provider. Although he started as Manager of the Desert American Insurance Agency (in 1978), he became an owner and President of the renamed "Flagship Group, Ltd." in March 1984.
Prior to his agency work, Steve worked as a marine underwriter and later Assistant Manager for the Marine Office of America Corporation (MOAC), a large U. S. insurance carrier, where his responsibilities included underwriting, claims review, and office administration. Before becoming involved in insurance, Steve worked for Gulf Oil Corporation as a ship's officer, sailing in positions up to Chief Mate, and was responsible for vessel safety, navigation, and ship management.
Steve received a BS in transportation engineering from the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, New York) and attended the University of Rhode Island's ocean engineering Master's degree program. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the East Coast Fisheries Association, the Propeller Club of the Port of Norfolk, South Tidewater Ship Repairers Association, the Hampton Roads marine Association, and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for Heritage Bank & Trust Co. and Heritage Bankshares, Inc. for a number of years.
Steve resides both in Pungoteague, VA and downtown Norfolk, VA with his wife Barbara.
